Artist's Description
The Portage canal bisects the Keewenaw peninsula in the upper peninsula of Michigan. This lift bridge connects the college (Michigan Technological University) town of Houghton with Hancock on the Keewenaw side. In this image, the yellow lights on the bridge glow during the evening's "blue hour".
The bridge is designed to allow both train and car traffic to cross. The counterweights lift the bridge whenever needed to allow boats to pass through. The Portage Canal cuts off many miles of travel for boats sailing in Lake Superior.
