A late spring day in May, at 8000 feet elevation in the Manzano Mountains of New Mexico, I encountered this fresh hatch of ladybugs on a clump of grass. I have never seen anything like it since. The ladybug is called a ladybird in English speaking parts of the world outside the USA. Entomologists prefer the names ladybird beetles or lady beetles as these insects are not classified as true bugs.
