This ferry arch at Pier 43 in San Francisco is an elaborate hoisting tower for loading and unloading railroad cars on the ferries. I read this was the departure point for prisoners going to Alcatraz.
The ship in the distance is the Jeremiah O'Brien.
The arch was built in 1914 to serve the Belt Railroad, and is now on the National Register of Historic Places (Pier 43 contributes to NRHP Listing #06000372: Port of San Francisco Embarcadero Historic District.)
