Description
Ponderosa pines grow a distinctive yellow colored bark as they age (120+ years) and are often called "Yellowbellies". If you get close enough to the bark to smell it - that is, put your nose right up to it - the tree has an aroma that many refer to as vanilla, or "baking cookies".
The yellow bark of this Ponderosa nicely balances the color of the cliffs in the background.
This scene greets visitors who hike up the Rio Cebolla valley in the Jemez Mountains of New Mexico.
