Artist's Description
This indigenous artwork of an angel still imparts a sense of life, even though it has eroded and faded with time. The angel is an architectural detail inside the San Xavier del Bac mission.
San Xavier del Bac is a historic Spanish Catholic mission located about 10 miles south of downtown Tucson, Arizona, on the Tohono O'odham Nation San Xavier Indian Reservation. Construction was completed in 1793.The artwork was probably commissioned by Fr. Velderrain's successor and most likely created by artists from Queretero in New Spain (now Mexico).
