Unlike most pictures of the Great Blue Heron (Ardea herodias), this image shows a bird in flight from above. The wingspan of this magnificent bird is 5 to 6 feet or more. This particular bird was wading in a flowing stream in the Rio Grande Valley of New Mexico at the Bosque del Apache National Wildlife Refuge.
