Description
This is a tribute to the artists of the long ago city of Pompeii. A close-up of a mosaic depicts a woman's face with strikingly detailed features and a serene expression. A dried rose rests against the textured surface, contrasting the ancient craftsmanship with a touch of natural decay. The tile work of the mosaic is known as opus vermiculatum, or worm like. The very small tiles are known as tesserae, and move in a sinuous pattern in this well executed artwork by an unknown Pompeiian artist.
