Description
Monarch butterflies (Danaus plexippus) that live west of the Rockies in the United States winter in southern California. I made this image at a small park in Pacific Grove where thousands upon thousands of monarchs will gather into one or two trees to winter. If the temperature gets warm enough the butterflies spread their wings. Otherwise, they look like so many brown leaves hanging in the tree.
There are many interesting facts about Monarchs. One of them is that they depend upon milkweed for their diet in the caterpillar stage. The sap of the milkweed is stored in their bodies and makes the butterflies taste terrible to predators.
