It was announced on May 13, 2015 that Surfer Dude, quite possibly the most famous Chincoteague pony since Misty, had passed. His remains were found in a very remote area on the southern compound of Assateague Island, Virginia. Surfer Dude, who was born in 1992 and lived to be 23, had as many as 17 mares in his band and sired many foals. His son, Riptide, has taken over his band and will continue the bloodline.
Chincoteague Pony at the Chincoteague Island National Wildlife Refuge, Virginia. The world famous Chincoteague Ponies are wild ponies that have lived on Assateague Island for the past several hundred years, left behind by the early settlers. It's believed the ponies are descendants of survivors of a shipwrecked Spanish galleon off the Assateague coast. The herd is divided between Virginia and Maryland.
