Description
This vertical axis solar telescope is located at Sacramento Peak in Sunspot, New Mexico. Only a portion of the telescope (136 feet) is above ground; it extends a full 228 feet below ground. It was a rare cloudy day when I made this image, yet a spot of sun still shows in the sky. The telescope was completed in 1969 with funding from the National Science Foundation, New Mexico and private parties. If you get a chance, read about this unique scope on the internet. The high spatial resolution optical solar telescope uses a vacuum to eliminate local convection within the instrument. The entire 250 ton scope depends on a bearing that contains 10 tons of mercury. Mind boggling.
