Many images of the Bosque del Apache National Wildlife Refuge in New Mexico are of the thousands of sandhill cranes, snow geese, Canadian geese and other birds that winter there. I was taken by this lone cottonwood tree framing a waxing moon in the background. The tree, a skeleton of its former self, is a memory of what once was on this desert landscape.
